WILLIAM COOKE William E. "Bill" Cooke, of Henderson, passed away Sept. 4, 2014, after a gallant struggle with a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Kansas City, Kan. His parents were George and Jane Cooke. Bill's father died in 1938. Bill moved with his family to Boulder City. There, his mother and aunt, Eliza Carter, published The Reminder, the first city newspaper, which they later renamed The Boulder City News. Thus, Bill began a lifetime career of "service" at age 10, as he delivered the paper to local residents. Bill graduated from Boulder City High School in 1946, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He advanced to hold the position of chief yeoman to the Commodore of the 8th Naval District. Upon retirement in 1967, Bill returned to Nevada, and then completed a second career. He was employed at the Nevada Test Site and Southern California Edison Company. After his second retirement, Bill became an emergency medical technician. He donated hundreds of hours treating accident victims on Nevada highways. Bill was a lifetime active member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He served as Exalted Ruler 1974-1975 Boulder City Lodge #1682. District deputy 2007-2008 and Nevada State Elks president 2012-2013. Bill was a man of honor. His loyalty, integrity, devotion and dependability created lifetime friendships. He was gracious, generous and fun-loving. His absence will be deeply felt by many. Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sydney; his four children, Sharyn DiSanza and family, William P. Cooke and family, Kenneth Cooke and family, and Theresa Johnson and family; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister, Shirley Alexander (Alvin) and family; and cousin, Mary Jane Smith and family. An Elks memorial service with military honors will be at 1:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City. Following the service, a gathering will be at the Boulder City Elks Lodge, with a pot luck meal served. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Elks National Foundation, care of Boulder City Elks Lodge #1682.

Military: Retired US Navy as a Chief after serving in WW II, Korea and Vietnam

Initiated into the Elks: Bill joined Boulder City Elks Lodge 1682 by initiation 5 January 1953 at age 24 while still serving in the Navy.
